about GC

GREEN CHILDREN (GC)

Green Children is a charitable, non-government organization that works to provide basic education to disadvantaged children including the vulnerable climate refugee children living in rural and urban slums of Bangladesh.  GC believes that every child has the right to learn to read and write as well as the rights of protection, health and nutrition, and space for simple recreation and play.  Yet children in Bangladesh, a large number of children face a range of difficulties that hinder their development and the full realization of their rights. It is important, thus, to provide them with a good childhood otherwise denied them.

The number of climate change refugees and deprived children in Bangladesh is increasing gradually every year. Most of them come into the urban areas, particularly in the capital city Dhaka, seeking opportunity, but almost always find themselves living in inhuman conditions in slums and streets; deprived of education, health, housing, sanitation, and practically all other human rights. Most of the time, these children are forced into the informal work sector or onto the streets where they beg every day for money and food.  It’s a matter of concern that many of them become involved in taking drugs and illicit activities. It is estimated that 40 million children in Bangladesh are currently ‘impoverished’.  The intergenerational nature of poverty means that most of these children, without education of any kind, will grow up and live as adults knowing nothing other than hunger, vulnerability, and marginalization. GC aspires to build a new world for these children with a better childhood for these children.
